2 -10 May, 2017 - Organised in collaboration with Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU 2017 and conducted by Brian Schembri, the EUYO performed alongside the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Malta to mark Europe Day 2017. This collaborative concert featured musicians from EUYO as well as the Malta EU Presidency Choir and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
A small group of EUYO musicians came together to perform the world premiere of "If" by Karl Fiorini inspired by Rudyard Kipling's poem, followed by Beethoven Symphony No. 9. Our players then featured in a Late Night Music Club Session presented by one of our members Sinéad O'Halloran, with special guest appearances by Ira Losco, Kafena and members of the Malta Youth Orchestra. Fiorini: “If” for tenor and orchestra
Inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s poem, a fatherly advice to his son emphasizing human dignity and wisdom but more essentially what it undertakes to be a man.
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is widely considered to be one of the composer’s greatest works, although he was so deaf at the time of its completion, Beethoven couldn’t hear the audience’s enthusiastic applause at its premiere.
With its rousing choral finale which uses Friedrich von Schiller’s “Ode to Joy”, Beethoven’s Ninth has also stood as an important cultural symbol. The melody that Beethoven set to Schiller’s text is the anthem of the European Union.

In the event, there were standing ovations aplenty; stunning playing from soloists violinist Emily Davis, 'cellist Klara Wincor, oboist Antonio Juárez and bassoonist Nikolaj Henriques; a profound speech by EUYO players about #culturenowmorethanever (thank you and well done Alma and Andrew!), and 2 encores, including a surprise: Swedish folk music played by young Swedish 'fiddlers' and the EUYO. The obligatory post concert jam session was provided by three of our multi talented and ever smile-inducing Romanians. All in all a reaffirming experience just when the world needs it!
