Domingos Freire Andrade Romana Ribeiro

Domingos Ribeiro was born in Macau in 1992.

He started his musical studies in 2002 at Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Braga – Portugal, with Cristina Costa, and completed his degree in Double bass in 2010 with high classifications.

He completed the 1st year of his Masters in Music Teaching in Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa which began after he finished his Bachelor's Degree in Double bass with Manuel Rêgo. He continued his studies in Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia, in Madrid, with Duncan McTier and Antonio Garcia Araque. He has scholarships from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Portugal) and Fundación Albeniz (Spain). He was an academist in the Akademie des Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, where he had classes with Philipp Stubenrauch, Wies de Boevé, Heinrich Braun e Alexandra Scott. Since 2017 he has been Principal Double Bass in Orquestra Gulbenkian, in Lisbon.

Domingos has played with various youth orchestras, such as the International Academie of Leiria for Orchestra and Conducting, with maestro Jean-Sébastien Béreau and in the 1st edition of Estágio Gulbenkian para Orquestra (Orquestra Gulbenkian’s Youth Orchestra). He was principal double bass of Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée and in the European Union Youth Orchestra.

Domingos was a Member of Orquestra de Câmara de Braga and Principal Double bass to the Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil – Portugal. He won an audition to freelance with Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto – Casa da Música in 2014, in Orquesta Nacional de España in 2016, in the Budapest Festival Orchestra in 2017. He also collaborated with Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra do Norte and Sinfonietta de Ponta Delgada.

He has worked with the following musicians: Mariss Janson, Bernard Haitink, Kirill Petrenko, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Riccardo Muti, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Franz Welser-Möst, Kent Nagano, Ton Koopman, David Afkham, Krzysztof Urbanski, Christian Zacharias, Alain Altinoglu, Lahav Shani, Matthias Pintscher, Christian Macelaru, Joana Carneiro, Susanna Malkki, Carlo Rizzi, Peter Eötvös, Bertrand de Billy, Pietari Inkinen, Juanjo Mena, Peter Stark, Vasily Petrenko, Lawrence Foster, Pedro Neves, Michael Zilm, Quentin Hindley, Joseph Swensen, Brad Lubman, Michael Sanderling, Baldur Brönnimann, Matthias Hermann, Enrico Pomàrico, James Judd, Olari Elts, Stefan Lano, Benjamin Schwartz, among others.

Domingos has worked in Masterclasses and particular classes with Janne Saksala, Matthew McDonald, Rinat Ibragimov, Catalin Rotaru, Petru Iuga, Edicson Ruiz, Wies de Boevé, Benedikt Hubner, Gary Karr, Iouri Axenov, Wolfgang Güttler, Petia Bagovska, Sorin Orcinschi, Hans Adler, Tom Goodman, and others.

As a soloist, he played recitals in Lisbon and Braga and performed with Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa’s Symphony Orchestra and with Camerata Gareguin Arantounian. He won 1st prize in “Vasco Barbosa” competition in 2015 and played as a soloist in Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon, with Camerata Atlântica.
