Belgian percussionist Koen Slootmans started practising at the age of seven at the local music school. He studied percussion, piano, solfeggio, music history and harmony.
At the age of seventeen he started at the Royal Conservatoire in Antwerp with Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers and obtained a Bachelor degree with great distinction in 2016. He continued his studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Nick Woud, Bence Major, Mark Braafhart, Peter Prommel and Richard Jansen.
Already at the age of 16 Koen became a member of the chamber orchestra La Passione. In 2016 he was timpanist in the Academy of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic orchestra. Between 2016 and 2018 he was a member of the Dutch national youth orchestra (NJO). He joined the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) in the 2018 spring tour. In May 2018 he won an academy position in the Antwerp symphony orchestra. He was a substitute in HetBalletorkest and played with Nieuw Philharmonie Utrecht.
Koen followed masterclasses with Marinus Komst, Koen Plaetinck, Pieterjan Vranckx, Hans Zonderop, Theodor Milkov, Ruud Wiener, Anders Astrand and John Beck.
