5-13 JULY 2018


From 5-13 July, a chamber group of EUYO musicians performed in Shanghai for the second Orchestra Exchange Programme of the 2.5-year Experience Europe programme sponsored by the EU Delegation to China. The aim of the Exchange Programme is to foster understanding between China and the EU.

The project involved EUYO musicians performing side by side with members of the EUYO’s Global Exchange Partner, Shanghai Orchestra Academy, as part of a Culture Exchange Week in the 9th MISA Festival. The 13 travelling EUYO members rehearsed and performed alongside the young musicians from the Shanghai Orchestra Academy, under director and EUYO alumnus Sarah Sew. It was an exciting opportunity to bring together musicians from different cultures to learn and exchange different approaches to performance, form musical friendships, and deepen understanding across continents. The 2018 Exchange Programme culminated in two performances on 11th July and 12th July, at Shanghai Urban Music Lawn and the Shanghai Symphony Chamber Hall.

5 JULY 2018


To celebrate the beginning of Austria’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, 20 EUYO musicians performed alongside acclaimed cellist Kian Soltani on Thursday 5th July at Wigmore Hall for a programme of Mozart and Haydn and the UK premiere of Ma by Gabriele Proy, one of Austria’s most engaging and distinctive contemporary composers. 1-8 JULY 2018



The new annually chosen Grafenegg Academy Orchestra is a new initiative of Campus Grafenegg and has been established especially for the two-week programme of the Grafenegg Academy. This year, the international personnel of the Orchestra with EUYO alumni at its heart met for the first time in Grafenegg under the direction of Campus Grafenegg Artistic Director Leon Botstein.




21 JUNE 2018



On Thursday 21 June, a string quartet of EUYO musicians performed at the European Cultural Heritage summit at the Neues Museum on Berlin’s museum island. The ensemble performed at the summit reception from 9:30-10:30pm at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The European Cultural Heritage Summit, which took place from 18-24 June 2018 in Berlin, Germany, has been recognised by the European Union as one of the key public events of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH), supported by the EU’s Creative Europe programme.

The European Cultural Heritage Summit was co-hosted by Europa Nostra, the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, SPK) and the German Cultural Heritage Committee  (DNK), acting as national coordinator of the EYCH in Germany. 




8 JUNE 2018



On Friday 8 June, 38 EUYO musicians performed at The European Culture Prize TAURUS ceremony in Dresden. The European Culture Prize is presented annually to individuals and organisations who have contributed to the idea of a unified Europe. The EUYO is delighted to have been presented with this prize alongside seven other recipients.

The performance took place at the Frauenkirche in Dresden at 8.15pm and was broadcast live by German public broadcaster, MDR. See the full repertoire below:

Alicante & South America

On 9 May, a group of EUYO musicians performed in Alicante as part of 2018 Europe Day celebrations. Presented by EUIPO, the annual Europe Day concert in Alicante took place in the ADDA concert hall in the city at 20:00. This year marked the eighth edition of the concert, held to commemorate the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. The musicians then travelled on to Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Montevideo with performances at Ibirapuera AuditoriumCCK Concert Hall and Teatro Solis. Alumni and previous concertmaster Sarah Sew directed the musicians. The full programme from the project is listed below:

2018 SPRING TOUR: 19 March - 15 April 2018

The EUYO's 2018 Spring Tour commenced with a two week residency in Ferrara as part of the official opening of the Orchestra's new three year residency project. The opening concert took place on Friday 30th March at Teatro Comunale di Ferrara where the Orchestra was joined by Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko and renowned pianist Till Fellner. The EUYO appeared as Orchestra in Residence at Grafenegg where they performed a formal Easter concert at informal chamber music activities. The 2018 Spring Tour also saw the beginning of an exciting new education and performance residency at Dubai Opera, in a wide-ranging series of open rehearsals, outreach events and concerts, performing alongside Vasily Petrenko and pianists Karim Said and Alexandra Dariescu. During this time, the Orchestra was awarded the 2018 Cultural Diplomat of the Year Award alongside four other recipients, and the EUYO were delighted to be invited to perform at the CultureSummit Abu Dhabi 2018, where it was presented with the award. The EUYO travelled to Romania and gave a final, atmospheric performance of the 2018 Spring Tour to a full house at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest.

Un Ensemble per la Cultura, Rome: 18 December 2017

On 18th December 2017, a chamber ensemble of EUYO musicians performed as part of Un Ensemble per la Cultura, an event organized by RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, to launch the 2018 Year of European Cultural Heritage in Italy.

Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Dario Franceschini, and Silvia Costa, MEP and former Chair of the Culture Committee of the European Parliament, were amongst the key note speakers. The event began at 11am on Monday 18 December at the RAI offices in via Asiago in Rome, and was broadcasted by RAI Radio.

China - EU Exchange Project 'Experiencing Europe' - Year 1 Project: 21 - 28 October 2017

From 21-28 October, a chamber ensemble of 11 EUYO members travelled to Shanghai for the first project of the three-year Experience Europe programme, sponsored by the EU Delegation to China. The aim of the programme is to foster understanding between China and the EU. The 11 travelling EUYO members performed side by side with young Chinese musicians from the EUYO’s Global Exchange Partner, the Shanghai Orchestra Academy. This is an exciting opportunity to bring together musicians from different cultures to learn and exchange approaches to performance, form musical friendships, and deepen understanding across the world. The October project included rehearsals, cultural exchange sessions and workshops from EUYO tutors. The project culminated in a concert at 7.45pm on Friday 27 October 2017, at the Chamber Hall of the recently constructed and much praised Shanghai Symphony Hall building.

EUYO at Princess of Asturias Award celebrations: Asturias, Spain: 13 - 18 October 2017 

In October, the EUYO’s brass and percussion ensemble performed in a variety of locations throughout Asturias in the days leading up to a special ceremony in honour of the Princess of Asturias award for Concord which was bestowed upon the European Union in June 2017. The ceremony will take place on Friday 20 October in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain in the presence of His Majesty, King Felipe VI. The EUYO brass and percussion ensemble performed as part of the cultural celebrations taking place in Oviedo in the week leading up to the ceremony.

The Princess of Asturias award for Concord was established on 24 September 1980 by Felipe, Prince of Asturias, then heir to the throne of Spain, "to consolidate links between the Principality and the Prince of Asturias, and to contribute to, encourage and promote scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of mankind's universal heritage."The jury granted the award to the EU, on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, for the union’s collaboration in the implementation and spreading of “values such as freedom, human rights and solidarity”.

The EUYO are truly delighted and honoured to be invited to celebrate the award which pays tribute to a united Europe which has upheld values of freedom, democracy, equality and respect for human rights for over 60 years.

2017 SUMMER TOUR Spirit of the North: 22 July - 23 August 2017

The EUYO's 2017 Summer Tour Spirit of the North commenced with an 18 day residency in Grafenegg, the Orchestra's Summer Home & Principal Venue Partner. The Orchestra then performed in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as part of Spirit of the North tour, focusing on and celebrating music from the Baltic and Nordic countries of Europe before travelling to Bolzano for the EUYO's annual summer residency.
